Survivor of Sudanese Genocide Uses Own Tragic Story to Inspire Others to Keep Will to Live

The Nebraska Medical Center Inpatient Service Worker Bashir Loding Earns National Award – for Reminding Patient how Precious Life Can Be

Orlando, Florida, October 26, 2011 — Bashir "Vincent" Loding, Inpatient Service Worker, The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska is one of the Sudanese 'lost boys' who was orphaned by the genocide in that country. Nevertheless, he retains his faith in humanity and in a better future. Sharing that faith with a distraught patient's mother at her moment of doubt and fear has earned Loding one of five national CARES awards at Sodexo's annual healthcare meeting here today. The CARES awards recognize employees each year who embody the company values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Enthusiasm and Service.

When Loding saw a woman crying in the waiting room, he reached out to her as only one who has suffered can. The woman told him her daughter had been in an accident and was in critical condition. He listened and offered words of encouragement. He told her, "have faith and courage and everything will be okay." He went on to share his personal story "I am here now and life is good; you must have faith that your daughter will be ok."

With those words, a friendship began. After the daughter's recovery, as she went home to California, the mother thanked the doctors and nurses for the amazing care they provided her daughter and singled out Loding for his kindness and courage. He was honored by the CEO with a plaque for putting the Patient 1st experience into practice, and Sodexo honors him again today.
