Sodexo Recognizes Three Chicago Organizations for Improving the Lives of People in the Community

CHICAGO – (July 13, 2011) – Sodexo, a world leader in Quality of Daily Life Solutions in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, recently honored Chicago-based organizations Allstate, Sinai Health Systems and Namaste Charter School for their leadership and innovation in improving the lives of Chicagoans at the first-ever "Celebrating Community Leadership in Chicago" event at the Shedd Aquarium. The event was established to recognize community leaders who are dedicated to making every day a better day in the Chicagoland area.

Each of the three honorees, representing corporate, education and health care, has demonstrated "best practices" in community leadership and service. When determining which of its partners to recognize as community leaders, Sodexo looked to Chicago-based organizations with which it has existing relationships that have made tremendous contributions to the Chicago community in the areas of health and wellness, fighting hunger, diversity and inclusion and sustainability.

According to Lourdes Diaz, vice president of Diversity Relations for Sodexo, the three honorees embody Sodexo’s spirit of teamwork, service spirit and spirit of progress.

"It is such an honor and privilege for Sodexo to be able to shine a light on the achievements of Allstate, Sinai Health System and the Namaste Charter School and all of the outstanding work they do in the Chicago community," said Diaz. "Just as Sodexo continually strives to improve the quality of life for those around us, our three partners do the same by providing innovative solutions that positively impact the communities where we live, work and serve."

Corporate honoree Allstate was chosen for its efforts embracing diversity and inclusion, spanning a combination of people, places, backgrounds and values. Among the community groups Allstate supports are the Chicago Urban League, Casa Central -Chicago, the Chicago Foundation for Women, the Goodman Theatre, the YMCA and the Neighborhood Housing Services of America. Through "Helping Hands," Allstate's employee-led committee which coordinates volunteer efforts, the company encourages its employees to volunteer in the community and provide financial support to community-based organizations. Employees and agency owners staff soup kitchens, teach children about business and the economy, clean up neighborhoods, paint schools, help run fundraising walks and host events at community centers on a year-round basis.

Healthcare honoree Sinai Health System, with facilities across Chicagoland, has been recognized across the country as a model for urban health care delivery. It provides nearly $97 million in community benefits including subsidized health services, language assistance, education, research, donations volunteer services and charity care. In addition, Sinai Interpreter Services, Deaf Access Program and Illinois Video Interpreter Network make health-related communications available 24/7 for foreign language speaking patients and the hearing disabled.

The education honoree, the Namaste Charter School, founded in 2004, has incorporated health, nutrition and athletics into its rigorous curriculum, which was created to ensure literacy, numeracy and a lifelong love of learning. The school adheres to the research-based principle that healthy, active children perform better in the classroom. In 2010, Namaste Charter School was the second school in the state of Illinois to receive the prestigious Gold School Award from the Healthier U.S. School Challenge (HUSSC).
