Montgomery-county based company lauded for creating jobs, supporting local farmers and efforts to fight hunger

Sodexo Recognized as Cornerstone of Maryland Communities and Economy

GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 23, 2009 — The Restaurant Association of Maryland awarded Sodexo with the McCormick Cornerstone Award at its annual meeting in Baltimore. The award recognized the company for creating jobs, purchasing local goods and its overall support for the state of Maryland.

Sodexo was recognized for its contributions to and in Maryland, including:

  • 2,950 Maryland residents are employed by Sodexo.

  • The company serves over 2,000 client sites in the state including schools and college campuses, corporations, hospitals, senior citizen communities and government agencies.

  • The company’s North American headquarters are located in Gaithersburg.

  • Sodexo partners with 62 local farmers to provide fresh produce to food service accounts throughout the state. 

  • The Sodexo Foundation, the company’s charitable arm, offers the Sodexo STOP Hunger Scholarships, awarding up to five $5,000 scholarships with matching grants to students who are working to fight hunger in their local community. Last year Mehta of Leonardtown, Md. was one of 19 regional honorees who received a $1,000 grant to the hunger charity of their choice. Students in grades K-graduate school are eligible.

  • The foundation also supports local efforts to fight hunger through programs like Feeding Our Future in 20 cities including Baltimore, Md. and Washington, D.C. The program provides healthy lunches to school children who might otherwise go hungry over the summer vacation, backpack programs that provide them with meals over the weekend.
