Innovations at Commercial Linen Exchange result in Reduced Water and Energy Consumption

Sodexo Laundry Facility: A Cleaner Clean

Phoenix, Ariz., April 5, 2010 – Sodexo, a leader in Quality of Life Solutions, has implemented innovations at its Commercial Linen Exchange that clean hospital linens and the environment at the same time. The 50,000 square foot facility cleans an average of 47 million pounds of laundry each year (900,000 pounds each week). By recycling 70 percent of the water through a continuous batch washer (CBW) compared to a Conventional Washroom the facility is saving 94 million gallons of water each year; enough to provide for the annual water needs of more than 2,600 people!*

At the same time, water being discharged from the plant is used to warm the intake water; reducing both the need to heat water entering the washing machines and cooling the water being discharged. All together these processes have allowed Sodexo to save $39,765 annually in natural gas; because the facility requires less heat to bring the water up to a proper washing temperature.

"Sodexo’s 'Better Tomorrow Plan' includes our commitment to reduce our energy and water consumption across all of our business lines including Laundry Services," says Sodexo District Manager Scott Norris. "We are proud to work for a company that evaluates equipment and the impact to our environment before making a purchasing decision. By doing so we are able to achieve these savings while continuing to meet the high standards that our hospital customers require."

*Based on EPA 2009 estimates that each person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water a day.
