Sodexo Foundation Honors Northwestern University Junior for Fighting Hunger in the Local Community

GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 29, 2013 — Sodexo Foundation announced today that Northwestern University junior, Sarah Suh of Buffalo Grove, Ill., has been named a 2013 Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarship recipient for her work fighting hunger in the local community. Suh will receive a $5,000 college scholarship and a $5,000 matching grant presented in her name to the hunger-related charity of her choice, the Campus Kitchen at Northwestern University. The Chicago-area student will be formally recognized on June 6th at the 14th Annual Sodexo Foundation Dinner in Washington, D.C.

Nationally, hunger continues to affect more than 50 million people – 16 million of them being children. In Chicago’s Cook County, nearly 21 percent of children are considered “food-insecure” according to the most recent figures from Feeding America. Suh has worked to reduce these numbers by volunteering hundreds of hours to the Campus Kitchen at Northwestern University (CKNU) and serving nearly 17,000 meals to 500 people in the Evanston, Ill. community.

“Volunteer efforts like these are essential in helping to improve quality of life for those in our communities – particularly at this time of year,” said Robert A. Stern, chair, Sodexo Foundation. “According to a recent survey, 43 percent of low-income families already struggling to put a meal on the table are faced with food budgets that can increase by an estimated $300 per month when school lets out.”

The Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarship recognizes students who are driving awareness and mobilizing youth to help eliminate hunger in America. Suh heads CKNU’s leadership team, coordinating resources and identifying sustainable methods by which hunger can be eliminated. She also educates students and community members in food waste prevention and hunger awareness. Her plan is to expand the number of people her program serves and to create a community vegetable garden by 2014 to provide them with more fresh produce.

Suh feels that her work goes beyond fighting hunger. She believes that, “By the act of giving and receiving food, we engage in an opportunity to share kindness, empathy and genuine care with diverse populations.”

The Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarship is named for Sodexo Foundation’s founder and former president, who was an unstoppable champion in the fight to end hunger.
