Rio Rancho Public Schools Expands Successful Breakfast Program

Gaithersburg, Md., September 21, 2010 – Breakfast participation increased by more than 650 percent at two Rio Rancho schools allowing students to get a healthy and delicious start to the day thanks to an child-friendly program developed by Sodexo, the district's nutrition provider, that delivers breakfast directly to students in the classroom. More students, and teachers, benefit from the easy-access breakfast program now that it has been introduced at Puesta del Sol for the start of the new school year.

Every morning, Sodexo delivers free breakfast meals directly to students through an in-classroom delivery with carts and cooler. The program aims to get more Rio Rancho Public Schools students to eat breakfast, ensuring that they have the energy needed to stay alert throughout the day.

Sodexo started the breakfast in the classroom program, its latest student health and wellness initiative, in April 2010 with a pilot program at Colinas del Norte Elementary.

"This program shows how we work together with the district to support student achievement in the classroom and in life by focusing on their overall well-being," said Mark Willis, general manager for Sodexo at Rio Rancho Public Schools.

The breakfast in the classroom program is part of Sodexo's commitment to the overall well-being of Rio Rancho students. Other programs include the A to Z Salad Bar, a fun and educational promotion that allows elementary students to try a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and Fresh Pick for Better Health, an education-based program that helps carry nutrition lessons beyond the cafeteria by teaching students about fruits and vegetables while encouraging parents to reinforce positive health choices by serving fruits and vegetables at home.

Sodexo is committed to take measurable sustainable actions that ensure a brighter future in the areas of health and wellness, environmental stewardship and community development. Sodexo School Services focuses on nutrition, achievement, environment, community and activity to promote student well-being.
