St. Francis Hospital Workers Share National Recognition for Caring for Woman with Disabilities and her Children

Orlando, Florida, October 26, 2011 — Taking in a young woman living with physical disabilities who was on the verge of being placed in nursing care and providing beds for her three small children has earned Sodexo employees Remonia Hollins, Patient Services Manager and Sandie Baker, Clinical Nutrition Manager, from St. Francis Hospital located in Columbus, Ga. national recognition from Sodexo, Inc. at the company's annual healthcare meeting here today. The CARES awards recognize Sodexo health care employees each year who embody the company values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Enthusiasm and Service.

Eleven months ago a young woman with physical disabilities began coming to ER almost daily; always alone and wearing a ragged dress. Hollins learned that the woman was coming to the hospital to eat. Although she had obvious symptoms of her medical conditions she always smiled and seemed happy that Hollins would talk to her. When Social Services wanted to place her in a nursing home and Hollins asked her what she wanted to do, she said, 'I want to live with you.' Today that woman has a home – living with a woman she now calls "Momma" who started out as a complete stranger.

Hollins shared the story with coworker Sandie Baker and told her that the woman's children were living with relatives so poor that they were sleeping on a cold floor with nothing more than a quilt and a blanket. Two days later, Baker called Hollins from the local mattress store having purchased new beds and together they delivered them to the grateful family.
