Sodexo Uses Innovative Technology to turn Hospital TVs into Interactive Patient Information Stations

GAITHERSBURG, Md., February 25, 2009  — Sodexo, the food and facilities management company for over 1,600 hospitals and health care facilities across the United States, is expanding their existing partnership with Skylight Healthcare Systems, the leader in interactive patient care technology.  The expanded agreement calls for Sodexo and Skylight to jointly market and implement the Skylight ACCESS® Interactive Patient System to a dozen US hospitals.

Typical results from hospitals using Skylight have shown that after deploying the ACCESS system, they see significant improvements in HCAHPS and inpatient satisfaction scores.  Additionally, health education viewings have increased dramatically — often showing increases of 3 to 4 fold over previous systems — while patient satisfaction with health education offerings increased by as much as 42 percent.  Hospitals have also captured substantial revenue through the integration of hospital retail, medical equipment, and outpatient services into the system.

The ACCESS system features an easy-to-use interface that turns hospital room televisions into interactive information stations that provide patients with access to an extensive patient health education library, entertainment options, in-room digital dining selection, and streamlines hospital staffs’ ability to respond to patient concerns and service requests, feedback, and pain management requests.

Multiple projects in Sodexo client hospitals around the country have demonstrated the ease with which patients can use the system to order meals, request housekeeping or other services, and even access information recommended by their physician (including detailed information about medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, or recovery after a surgical procedure).

In pilot testing conducted at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, Florida, the hospital integrated HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) questions into the ACCESS system. Combined with Sodexo’s CARES training, this created a real-time feedback and service alert functionality that allowed hospital staff to immediately identify and respond to patient satisfaction priorities, significantly reducing patient requests for non-medical tasks or concerns, while increasing satisfaction scores for both patients and nursing staff. “The solutions brought by Sodexo and Skylight and have helped us continue to build our reputation for service excellence,” said Edwin Loftin Jr., RN, MBA, FACHE, Vice President of Nursing at Parrish.  “These amenities and interactive services help us create a distinctive patient experience while improving patient satisfaction and yielding a sustainable competitive advantage.”
