Sodexo announced today their support of the annual Job Corps Culinary Expo to be held outside Philadelphia, Pa. June 15-19, 2009.
GAITHERSBURG, MD, June 12, 2009 - Sodexo, a comprehensive service solutions company with a core business of integrated food and facilities management, announced today their support of the annual Job Corps Culinary Expo to be held outside Philadelphia, Pa. June 15-19, 2009. Students ages 16-24 from Job Corps Centers in the Eastern United States gather to test and demonstrate newly developed culinary skills from their Job Corps training.
Job Corps Culinary Expo, which began in 1987, is an annual conference and competition held by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Job Corps Program. Each of the participating Job Corps Centers bring a four-person team to the event, allowing students to highlight their skills gained while enrolled.
Through this event, Sodexo provides employment opportunities for the students. “By working with the Job Corps we continue to support the future of America’s youth,” says President of Sodexo Government Services, Greg Verone. “It is a great opportunity to help these future chefs succeed, and help them begin a job that is sustainable for a long and rewarding career.”
The students compete in a ‘knowledge bowl’ and hot food competition. Industry professionals serve as keynote speakers, judges and workshop presenters. The students have the opportunity to market themselves to potential employers for post graduation employment. Sodexo’s Senior Recruiter Jo Klingberg will address the students and guests presenting her insight on “How to Make It in the Food Service Industry” with a focus on ways to prepare and succeed in their culinary careers. Sodexo’s Executive Chef for the Marine Corps West Coast, Donovan Brown, will also participate in the Culinary Expo serving as as judge and speaker.
Sodexo, who is supporting the event for the second year, was recently awarded a contract to provide foodservice operations at its 5th Job Corps Center location in North Texas. Sodexo is actively involved in the Job Corps as a member of the National Job Corps Association. Sodexo is committed to the health and future of America’s youth through supporting the Armed Services YMCA, the Marine Corps Marathon’s Healthy Kids Fun Run, and as International Sponsor of Youth Sports for the Marine Corps Community Services.
