New nutrition provider invests in students, school district and Greater Detroit community

Sodexo Helps Inkster Public Schools Focus on Student Achievement

Gaithersburg, Md., September 29, 2010 – A new partnership between Inkster Public Schools and student nutrition provider Sodexo delivers breakfast to class, enhances healthy menu choices, and teaches students lifelong nutrition lessons.

Teaching students about good nutrition and making healthy choices is a real challenge if they aren't eating at the cafeteria, so Sodexo took a fresh look at the district's menu and created a new program offering more variety and a wide selection of healthy choices to increase student participation in the district's nutrition program. Along with a revamped district menu, Sodexo is also introducing a breakfast in the classroom program that uses kiosks and in-class cart deliveries to get more students the fuel needed for a successful school day.

"We are a student-focused organization and all of our decisions are made with student achievement in mind," said Ruth E. Williams, board of education member, Inkster Public Schools. "Sodexo understands and relates to our commitment to the students and the company's programs will bring positive changes to the district."

Sodexo is also making a major investment in new equipment purchases and facilities upgrades to better provide healthy, nutritious and delicious meals for students. One such upgrade is a new kitchen Sodexo staff will share with the district's culinary arts program. Students in that program will train using the same state-of-the-art professional cooking equipment Sodexo uses each day. Additionally, Sodexo's staff will interact with students in the culinary arts program, imparting wisdom gained from real world experience.

"Much of the work we do at Inkster Public Schools is focused on education," said John White, district manager for Sodexo. "Not only are we teaching students to make healthy choices throughout their lives, but we are also committed to sharing our culinary expertise with a new generation of chefs."

Sodexo's commitment to the Greater Detroit community extends beyond the walls of the schools it serves. A new backpack weekend feeding program set to launch later this year will provide nutritious weekend meals for Inkster elementary school students who might otherwise go without.

In addition, the Detroit chapter of Sodexo's African American Leadership Forum employee network group is partnering with Sodexo's staff in the district to adopt a school. This partnership will allow Sodexo employees to work directly with students through activities like reading programs and mentoring relationships.

Sodexo is committed to take measurable sustainable actions that ensure a brighter future in the areas of health and wellness, environmental stewardship and community development. Sodexo School Services focuses on nutrition, achievement, environment, community and activity to promote student well-being.
