Sodexo Earns SNCR Excellence Award for Innovative Use of Social Media

GAITHERSBURG, Md., December 2, 2009 – Sodexo, Inc. recently received an Excellence in New Communications Award from the Society for New Communications Research (SNCR) in the category of microblogging for its innovative use of social media, specifically Twitter, in its recruiting efforts.

The SNCR Excellence in New Communications Awards honor individuals, corporations, governmental and nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, media outlets, and individuals who are innovating in the use of new media and communication tools and methodologies. SNCR also awarded Sodexo a Commendation of Excellence for External Communication and Communities.

Sodexo, with 2008 revenues of $7.7 billion, is a leading provider of on-site service solutions specializing in corporate, health care, education, and government markets in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Sodexo employs 120,000 people in the company’s six business lines, serving more than 6,600 clients and ten million customers daily. Sodexo has used Twitter since November 2008 to expand its ability to identify and recruit top talent, including diverse candidates, and to engage with potential employees in a more consistent and meaningful way. Each year, Sodexo fills approximately 5,000 management and executive positions in the U.S.

“To ensure our position as a top employer, we are committed to staying ahead of the curve with new media—identifying ways to take innovative communication venues and explore their application for recruiting by sharing the company culture and engaging with the four generations that make up today’s workforce,” said Arie Ball, Vice President, Sourcing and Talent Acquisition.

“Our challenge is to continually expand our access to top talent by seeking new ways to connect with prospective employees, and to build a diverse talent pipeline at all experience levels, from entry-level through executive,” Ball said. “Through Twitter, Sodexo has expanded its outreach to varied pools of talent, which enables us to keep prospective employees abreast of job opportunities and new company initiatives.”

“Sodexo’s program is an impressive example of the successful and innovative use of new tools, technologies, solutions and practices to enhance communications and relationships,” said Jen McClure, founder and president of the Society.

More than 50 Sodexo recruiters use Twitter to share information about the company’s culture. Job candidates can follow Sodexo on Twitter; join Facebook or LinkedIn groups; visit YouTube and flickr channels, or share comments at www.sodexocareersblog.com. Use of these social media channels increased traffic to the Careers page on Sodexo’s website from an average of 52,000 unique visitors per month in February 2008 to 181,000 unique visitors per month in October 2009, and helped the company reduce its annual recruitment advertising expenses by $300,000 a year.
