Sodexo recognized for awarding need-based scholarships to Marine dependents and launching an annual mentorship program for recipients
Gaithersburg, Md., June 3, 2013 — The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation celebrated its 2013-2014 scholarship recipients and recognized Sodexo, leader in Quality of Life Services, with the 2013 Globe and Anchor Award for its generous support of Marine Corps Families Saturday night, June 1, in Washington, D.C. David Scanlan, president of Sodexo’s Government client segment, was on hand to accept the 2013 Globe and Anchor Award on behalf of Sodexo.
Sodexo established a scholarship fund in 2012 for students studying culinary arts, hospitality services, and business administration and awarded five, $5,000 need-based scholarships to Marine dependents this year. The company also launched an annual mentorship program for its scholarship recipients. The Scholarship Foundation has a notable track record of accomplishments—89 percent of scholarship recipients attend four-year institutions and approximately 79 percent graduate, at a time when the nationwide rate is only 31 percent. Last year alone, the Foundation awarded 1,913 scholarships. Students pursue a variety of degrees, and an impressive 42 percent of recipients are majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, bringing crucial skill sets into the workforce.
“The opportunity to support the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is just a small way our company can show appreciation to Marines, and their families, who sacrifice so much for our freedom,” said Scanlan. “I’m proud that Sodexo can contribute to the work that the Foundation is doing in these challenging economic times, proud to have an impact for this important community we serve and ultimately proud to be making a difference in the lives of these deserving scholars.”
