Responsible Sourcing

We are committed to 4 key areas of concern: the Supply Chain code of conduct; local, seasonal and sustainably grown products; sustainable fish and seafood; and sustainable equipment and supplies.

Energy and Emissions

We leverage our reach and scale by implementing environmental reduction programs at the sites we serve. Our overall goal in North America is that 100 percent of sites implement a reduction program by 2020.

Water and Effluents

Our goal in North America is that 100 percent of sites implement complete water reduction programs by 2020. Our criteria for an effective water reduction plan include client and employee engagement steps, equipment and process changes, and performance measurement. The cumulative impact of these water reduction and water efficiency measures will contribute not only to a smaller total water footprint, but also to the bottom line of our clients.

Materials and Waste

In North America, our goal is that 100 percent of sites will implement a waste reduction program by 2015. Reduction programs are the specific criteria that we implement at site-level to drive overall waste reduction throughout our portfolio of accounts. The criteria include site-level client and employee engagement, system and efficiency improvements, and more precise measurement of performance.

Measures to streamline food purchasing and reduce waste within our food preparation and storage systems realize savings to both Sodexo and our clients in terms of food costs and waste disposal fees. On the consumer side, we are focusing our efforts on reducing waste by implementing educational initiatives such as promoting trayless dining and site level recycling programs.

Sustainable Supplies
Supply Chain code of conduct

Supply Chain code of conduct

We will ensure compliance with a Global Sustainable Supply Chain Code of Conduct in all the countries where we operate by 2015. Engaging the Supply Chain is seen as a major step towards a sustainable production system. Supplier Standards signed by suppliers help companies ensure that satisfactory labor and environmental conditions are applied in service provision. Verification by the company itself or by independent third parties ensures the enforcement of the Standards by the supplier. ISO certifications

FRANCE - Many major suppliers are ISO 14001-certified, while others have signed environmental charters. Our procurement department in France has been certified to ISO 9002 standards since 1995 and achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2001. In 2008, Sodexo conducted a survey of 150 suppliers with an 82% response rate to identify which suppliers are the leaders in sustainable development. The suppliers received a report of their performance and a benchmark compared to other suppliers.

Local, seasonal or sustainably grown or raised products

Red tractorUNITED-KINGDOM – Sodexo is the first food services company to promote “Red Tractor” certification for produce grown or raised in the UK, providing assurance of governance and traceability from farm to fork. This assurance scheme symbolizes high levels of food safety and ensures that only EU-approved agrochemicals and fertilizers are used. Red Tractor-approved milk, cream, fruits, vegetables and meat are included in Sodexo catalogues.

Through this commitment, we confirm our wish to contribute to sustainable agriculture, based on the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity, as well as respect for social justice and economic viability.

In several countries, we work with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) on our sourcing and in some cases for the certification of our sites. In the Netherlands, Sodexo was the first foodservices company to obtain the MSC ecolabel and certification in April 2009. In the UK, Sodexo is the leading contract caterer for MSC-certified sites, with 1,000 sites certified by late 2010 and it plans to roll out this program across the business. Sodexo serves 123 tons of wild MSC fish per year and was the first foodservice company to achieve MSC certification at all of its sites in 2009.
